Wyoming – the state with the smallest population in the USA clearly has big ideas when it comes to online gambling. Just recently, the state introduced a fresh gambling bill – following in the legalization of online sports betting in 2021.
The Bill in Detail
Under the new bill, slots, poker, blackjack, and other card and table games typically found in land-based casinos will be available online. The state’s Gaming Commission will be in charge of overseeing and regulating the gambling market in Wyoming.
Initially, the Bill allows for five online casinos which will pay a $100,000 fee for their license. That license will be renewable every five years for an additional $50,000. Licenses for vendors will cost much less – $10,000 and they will also be renewable every five years, but for a fee of $5,000.
Shared Liquidity Agreements
Since Wyoming has a relatively small population of just over 578,000, the success of its new online gambling bill may rely on shared liquidity agreements with other states.
Such agreements would allow Wyoming’s online gambling operators to accept punters from other permissible jurisdictions – all for reciprocal agreements.
In addition, this type of provision would make it possible for Wyoming to join the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, and have access to a wider range of casino players. The MSIGA currently has the following states:
- Nevada
- Michigan
- New Jersey
- Delaware
Responsible Gambling Provisions
Responsible gambling should always be the cornerstone of every online gambling regulation and that is the case with Wyoming. Under the new bill, operators would need to pay 10% of all their revenue in taxes.
That revenue will then be used to fund problem gambling programs, for which $300,000 will be allocated every year.
If Wyoming successfully enforces these provisions, then it will surely manage to strike a nice balance between the state’s economic growth and the social responsibility within the industry.
Of course, there is also an age limit for casino players in the state. Users would need to be at least 18 years old to gamble online, which is consistent with age restrictions for other forms of gambling in Wyoming.
